Overview
An immersive, planet-hopping space adventure; a post-apocalyptic world corrupted by evil; a steampunk saga of unlikely, everyday heroes. The Fjord is set after the collapse of the Earth.
In the year 2305, the Earth was devoured by a massive wormhole. It was disfigured and spat out elsewhere in space and time. Before the catastrophe, a group of the Earth’s most powerful elites managed to save themselves by escaping onto a spaceship called Rodinia. Everyone else was doomed to almost certain death. On the newborn Earth, scattered survivors numbering in the hundreds of thousands created a peaceful frontier society of inventors and explorers. But that all changed when Rodinia arrived. Seeking a way to motivate humans to adapt to their new world, scientists developed a system of harvesting brain chemicals from successful people into troubled ones: Mindscape. What began in good spirit has become something hideous. Those who use the drug are helplessly addicted, and the mass brain-draining is creating a growing population devoid of life and energy.
Tonally, The Fjord is rooted in mystery, adventure, and the supernatural. There is a heavy emphasis on space travel, retro-futuristic technology, and apocalyptic colours and themes. Because of the changes that befell the Earth, it also features animals, plants, environments, machines, cultures, and laws of physics different from the planet we know. Because most things were salvaged, the clothes people wear are a mashup of different styles and time periods. The series is based in the spirit of tinkering, exploration, and discovery in a new, unpredictable world.
Thematically, the series deals with the corruption of human nature and the strength of individualism. It also explores the challenges and opportunities of adapting to a changing environment. What could the world look like if it were destroyed and reimagined? Perhaps humanity would seize the chance to rebuild on righteous ideals and principles. But without people who think for themselves, it will be scarred by control and exploitation.
The story
When we meet our characters, their lives look very different. Barko Erland is an outcast prisoner in the main city of Nonetown, looking out the window of his cell as he plays a trumpet. Meanwhile, the wanted scientist Dr. Hatka trudges through the Northem Desert, nearly out of food and water. Having once worked for the government, he deserted when he learned the true extent of the brain drain. Far away, vagabond chemist Rael Bakshi explores the volatile Lake Hydra, a black lake situated on a flat rock between two moons. He is searching for chemicals to create an antidote for Mindscape victims when he is overpowered by the lake’s current and dragged down into empty space as the rock rotates 90 degrees.
In our first episode(s), all three protagonists are unknowingly saved by two mysterious allies. The dramatic rescue scenes showcase some of the environments, institutions, and technology of the new world—from Barko’s nail-biting prison escape, to Hatka’s high-tech bolt out of the desert, to Rael’s metaphysical rescue from the reaches of space. A peculiar, bearded man, who wears a robe and a bishop’s hat, reveals himself as “the Bishop.”
The Bishop is an ally of the Lady of the Highway (Loth), a wind-spirit that exists beyond space-time who is able to incarnate under certain conditions. With her help, the Bishop has brought the protagonists together and taken them to a place they have never seen: a massive fjord, with a temple on one side. In shock and grateful for the Bishop, they follow him toward the temple as they try to make sense of what has just happened.
Inside the temple is a huge mirror. Hatka steps in front of the mirror, and nothing happens. As Rael joins him, the two are subject to an experience incomprehensible to the human mind. Suddenly, their consciousness fuses, and their mental worlds collide. Memories, hopes, fears, all blended together in an instant. During their experience in front of the mirror, they meet Loth, in a human form. She has watched over them for longer than they know and has chosen them to free humanity from the yoke of Mindscape. The Bishop explains that he is the last guardian of this mirror, called the Baron of the Fjord. He believes it is the key to empowering the three heroes and stopping the brutal Mindscape regime, lead by the deceptive Professor Dante.
Much of their world is connected, but for now, the protagonists are only beginning to learn its secrets. They discover that Loth’s power is weakening, and that the mirror may be the last hope of freeing humanity.
That is how our three main protagonists learn of their destiny and the task ahead of them. In addition to The Bishop and Loth, our protagonists team up with the brilliant Dr. Craneswolf, a woman of intellect and beauty who leads the freedom-fighting Human Identity Resistance. She works alongside her second in command Thalia, a no-nonsense sidekick of Amazonian strength. Each character has a role suited for them. Barko’s temperament puts him at the forefront of the fighting and into enemy territory; Hatka’s expertise on Mindscape makes him a crucial brain behind the operation; Rael’s deep understanding of the natural world sends him back to Lake Hydra to find the rumoured Mindscape lab. Their bravery is tested through these trials.
The adventure hits unexpected turns. In Nonetown, Barko and Hatka confirm their suspicion that the food supply has been contaminated with mind-altering chemicals. At the Fjord, Rael uncovers the lost journals of Rachel Wyndcroft—the first guardian of the Baron of the Fjord—and begins to put the pieces together.
Throughout the operation to take down Mindscape, a gradual series of flashbacks reveals that Loth was once a nurse who managed to save three babies in hardened cocoon vessels before the apocalypse struck. Her subconscious transcended her body in the instant of the split, taking the form as the wind-spirit she is today. The babies grew into our protagonists—Barko, Hatka, and Rael—and Loth has always protected them. The nurse’s human form was reborn in the early days of the new world as Rachel. She is the girl who first discovers the mirror and its powers. Rachel appears periodically throughout the series as Loth’s human form, though her story is not yet revealed.
The heroes must act fast—every day, Loth’s power weakens as the bright mind of humanity continues to dim.
